1861 - Jefferson Davis is sworn in as President of the Confederate States of America.
1865 - Charleston, SC surrenders to the Union, and is burned by General Sherman.
1885 - Mark Twain's "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" are published.
1898 - Enzo Ferrari, Italian designer of the Ferrari automobile is born.
