A new kind of power has arrived in our nation's capital. But it's not a new upstart politician. It's not even a fresh new military general. It's baseball's newest rookie pitcher -- Stephen Strasburg.
The new Washington Nationals starting pitcher dazzled the history books in his first major league debut last night. He struck out 14 Pittsburgh Pirates and walked none over seven innings in a 5-2 Nationals victory. His 100-mph fastball did the trick. So did his 90-mph changeup. And no pitcher has ever struck out so many batters with so few pitches -- 94 total, 65 of which were strikes. No pitcher has ever done that in his first major league appearance.
Yeah, I think we'll be hearing about Stephen for some time to come. He's the new phenom. The "most hyped and closely watched pitching prospect in the history of baseball" -- according to Sports Illustrated. It'll be fun to watch his career develop now that he's in the majors. I'm a Milwaukee Brewers fan first and foremost. But I might just have to call myself a Strasburg fan somewhere in there too.
"No mere mortal, Strasburg dominates in debut"
