"Barry Bonds*: Permanently Branded"Earlier this year, San Francisco Giants baseball player Barry Bonds hit his 756th homerun, breaking Hank Aaron's long-standing all-time record of 755. Today, it was announced by Fashion designer Marc Ecko -- who currently owns the record-breaking ball -- that it will be branded with an asterisk, and sent to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Ecko bought the ball in an online auction on Sept. 15 for $752,467. He then set up a Web site for fans to vote on the ball's fate: brand it, send it to Cooperstown unblemished, or launch it into space. The decision to brand and donate it won out.
The asterisk denotes that Bonds' record is tainted by illegal steroid use. The self-centered egotistical slugger has, however, denied using performance-enhancing drugs. Despite the brand, though, the Hall of Fame remains eager to accept and permanently display the ball.
