"Earthquake Rattles Milwaukee"At 4:37 a.m. this morning, a 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Illinois. It was centered six miles from West Salem, Illinois, 66 miles from Evansville, Indiana, and could be felt up here in Milwaukee -- 450 miles away. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
The last earthquake in the region to approach this morning's severity, was a 5.0 magnitude quake that struck in 2002. The worst was a 5.4 magnitude in 1968, although the New Madrid quakes of 1811 and 1812 are noted to have reached as high as 8.1 (the richter scale did not exist at the time) and were felt throughout the state.
