There were once thousands of
caravanserai -- staging posts for the weary traveller -- dotting the land throughout Asia, North Africa and South-Eastern Europe. The Silk Road, an important and extensive network of routes, had quite a few. Many still survive as a monument to days gone by, while others are abandoned and slowly turning to dust.
