Back in 2002, Fox showed interest in remaking the old 1966-1967 black and white science fiction television series, "
The Time Tunnel". The series from the 60's lasted only 30 episodes. Fox thought a modern remake might catch on thirty-six years later. As a result, a complete 2002 pilot episode for the new Time Tunnel series was produced by Twentieth Century Fox, Fox Television Studios and Regency Television. It starred
David Conrad,
Andrea Roth,
Tawny Cypress, and
Kavan Smith. Ultimately, however, that one hour pilot episode was not picked up by Fox, and therefore never aired on television.
As it turned out, Fox chose to go with another new science fiction series instead, a futuristic space adventure produced by Joss Whedon called.... "
Firefly". Of course, as we all know, Fox chose to cancel "Firefly" after only eleven of fourteen episodes had aired. So, that sci-fi show didn't last long either.
Earlier today, I came across the entire 2002 unaired pilot for the "The Time Tunnel" on Youtube. It's not half bad. By today's standards, it may be a bit too formulaic, it doesn't focus on the characters as much as I would have liked, and it speeds through the plot a little too fast, but, ten years ago, it would have been an excellent series pilot. And perhaps a solid science fiction series had it been picked up.
For your convenience, I've embedded the entire 2002 unaired "The Time Tunnel" episode right here on my blog (embedded in five parts). In total, it's 48 minutes long. Give it a watch, and if you like it, feel free to comment. I'd love to hear your thoughts!
